It was not the way anyone wanted to start Christmas Eve.
Firefighters from Waterville to Lawrencetown were called to a sad scene around 2 a.m. Dec. 24.
Chief Watson Armstrong said a barn on Brooklyn Street was engulfed in flames when the Kingston District Fire Department was alerted to the blaze.
“The barn was fully involved when we arrived and it, in turn, caught the house on fire,” he said.
Armstrong said there were 10 cattle inside, and it’s possible that only one may have escaped, but he was unable to confirm that as of 7 a.m.
The windy weather caused the flames to spread to a nearby unoccupied home.
“That created a lot of havoc,” Armstrong said.
The structures were deemed a total loss.
Armstrong said it was too soon to speculate on a cause while firefighters continued their overhaul efforts.
There were no injuries to area residents or firefighters.
